Construction Accident At A Waste Treatment Facility

Two employees of Albuquerque-based Magnum Steel, a subcontractor to the Laboratory, were injured Wednesday in a construction accident at a waste treatment facility at Technical Area 50.

The workers, both males, were struck by a steel stairway that fell during a crane operation as the stairway was being removed. Both were treated at the scene and then transported to Los Alamos Medical Center.

At the hospital one worker, age 24, was treated and released and the other, age 51, was initially treated at LAMC and later transported to Denver for additional treatment.

A formal investigation began immediately and all hoisting and rigging operations at the Laboratory have been suspended until the cause of the accident is understood.

“These steel workers are in our thoughts and prayers, and we all hope for their full and speedy recoveries,” said Laboratory Director Michael Anastasio. “The safety of everyone at the Lab is paramount. We will use all available resources to investigate this incident, including experts from our partner companies.”
